Busan for First-Time Visitors: Coastline and Old Downtown

Free guideEditorial guide by LikeFavor. Nobody paid for this article. How we label content.

Busan rewards a trip with room to slow down. For a first visit, choose two different sides of the city: the coastline around Haeundae, and the older downtown around Jagalchi Market. Add Gamcheon Culture Village if you have the time and energy for its hillside lanes.

Start with Haeundae and Dongbaekseom

Haeundae is Busan's best-known beach. Visit Busan notes that people come throughout the year, so a walk by the sea can work even when it is not swimming season. The same official guide points to Dongbaekseom Island and its coastal trail at one end of the beach. Make this your unhurried waterfront outing, with time to stop for a meal nearby.

If you have a second evening, consider Gwangalli for a different waterfront view of Gwangandaegyo Bridge. Keep the two beach areas as options rather than trying to cover every coastal stop in one afternoon.

Explore Jagalchi and the old downtown

Jagalchi Market is a working seafood market in the Nampo area. Visit Busan describes both outdoor stalls and an indoor market, with seafood dishes available nearby. Walk through first, compare the menus, and confirm the price before ordering. Shops and restaurants set their own offerings and prices.

This part of the city pairs well with nearby streets in the old downtown. Leave time to wander instead of treating the market as a quick photo stop.

Add Gamcheon if your schedule allows

Gamcheon Culture Village is known for its hillside setting and winding lanes. Visit Busan recommends beginning at the village information center to learn the area's story before exploring. The hills and stairs make comfortable shoes a sensible choice. Be considerate around homes and local businesses while taking photos.

For a short stay, give the waterfront and old downtown separate blocks of time. If you have only one day, choose the area that interests you most and save the other for a return trip. Check the official attraction pages before leaving for any changes to access or visitor information.

A flexible two-day outline

On the first day, walk along Haeundae Beach and continue toward Dongbaekseom if the weather and your energy allow. If a second beach is more appealing than another activity, save Gwangalli for the evening. On the second day, begin around Jagalchi Market and decide whether to add Gamcheon. This plan leaves room for a long meal or an unexpected stop without making the whole day depend on a tight timetable.

Busan is spread out, so check the actual route between your accommodation and each area before you leave. Visit Busan lists transport information on its attraction pages, but bus routes and service details can change. Treat any travel time in an app as an estimate, especially when crossing between the eastern coast and the old downtown.
